- A manual J calculation is often required by municipalities when installing a new HVAC system. Sometimes they are even required for replacement of an existing system.
-This is the only truly accurate way to determine the correct size for a heating or cooling system. Past "rule of thumb" methods don't work with new building materials and practices.
-It ensures efficiency. Properly sized equipment works more efficiently saving you money on your utility bills.
-Bigger is not better. Oversized equipment can constantly cycle on and off shortening the life of the equipment. Oversized cooling equipment can also have problems dehumidifying the air. They can lead to the "damp basement' feeling in the house and potential for mold.
